What is an Operating Data Model

An Operating Data Model (ODM) is a conceptual framework that defines the structure, relationships, and semantics of business domains and the data used within an organization’s operations. It serves as a blueprint for organizing and representing the data necessary to support business processes, decision-making, and reporting.ODM provides a comprehensive and consistent view of the data across different systems, divisions and applications within an organization. It also defines the entities (objects), attributes (properties), and relationships that exist within the operational context. These entities and relationships typically correspond to real-world business concepts, such as customers, products, orders, transactions, and inventory.

ODM describes Entities and attributeswithin the operational domain e.g. “Customer,” “Product,” and “Order” would have attributes such as name, address, SKU, price, and quantity. It also describes the relationships between entities and data flow between different processes and systems. The data that represents real world entities is described as Attributes with Master Data and Metadata, Associations, Business Rules and Constraints, Data types, hierarchies and classifications,
